SRO Motorsports Group adds reforestation project in Belgian Ardennes to expanding sustainability programme
  • Reforestation covers 1.5 hectares affected by ash dieback
  • Chosen site located less than 100 kilometres from Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps
  • Project represents latest step in wide-ranging sustainability strategy

SRO Motorsports Group has further diversified its sustainability strategy by joining the fight to protect and revive forests.

Working with Reforest'Action and its partner Sylva Nova, SRO will support reforestation in the Walloon region of Belgium by helping to restore an area of high biological interest. This represents the next step in the company's growing effort to reduce its own environmental footprint while empowering stakeholders to do the same.

Trees play an essential role in mankind's efforts to combat climate change thanks to their cycle of carbon absorption, while also helping to protect wildlife and encouraging biodiversity. Placing an emphasis on supporting areas local to its racing activities, the reforestation project chosen by SRO is located less than 100 kilometres from Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, home of the marquee TotalEnergies 24 Hours of Spa.

Set within a Natura 2000 protection area of high biological interest, the forest was severely affected by ash dieback, which required a significant number of trees to be felled. In their place, a total of 2,050 new trees will be planted in an area spanning 1.5 hectares. This plantation will see the introduction of five diversified species: sessile oak, pedunculate oak, cherry, alder, and apple.

The project will restore the forest atmosphere, benefiting the wider ecosystem, while also ensuring its long-term health. It forms part of SRO’s 2030 sustainability strategy, which places the environment at the heart of the company’s operations. Taking a leading role in the drive for carbon neutral motor racing, SRO will seek to create a better future for the sport while making its own contribution towards global climate protection.

Laurent Gaudin, General Manager TotalEnergies 24 Hours of Spa: "SRO Motorsports Group is fully committed to sustainability and this project adds a new dimension to our efforts. The TotalEnergies 24 Hours of Spa is the cornerstone of our racing activities, making it especially important that we engage with a project near to Spa-Francorchamps. As general manager of the TotalEnergies 24 Hours of Spa, I am especially pleased that we will support reforestation in the Walloon region. By planting new trees we can contribute to the regeneration of this area and help to protect it for future generations."
