Forest Carbon Project

The Katingan Mentaya project SRO is supporting is protecting a tropical forest area in the island of Borneo. The project has been running since 2010, by forest protection and restoration developers Permian Global and its partners.

The area has 149,800 hectares of intact tropical peat forest, the protection of which generates an average of 7.5 million tonnes of avoid emissions per year. This is the equivalent of preventing the burning of more than seven million barrels of oil each year, closing down two coal fired power stations per year, or taking 2.000.000 cars off the road each year.

Besides making significant contribution towards addressing climate change, the project is supporting local communities to become more sustainable and safeguarding a habitat rich in biodiversity.
